In the midst of this turmoil, a media report claimed that Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, 86, is allegedly preparing to leave the country with nearly 20 close family members if the country’s military or security forces refuse to back the government. The report also suggested that Khamenei might possess financial assets abroad and could potentially move to Moscow, Russia.
However, the Iranian Embassy in India has completely denied these claims, calling them “false, fabricated, and baseless.” The embassy emphasized that even during the intense 12-day conflict with Israel, Khamenei did not leave Iran, proving his firm hold and commitment to remain in the country. “These are lies spread by hostile nations,” the embassy stated, strongly condemning the report and accusing adversaries of trying to destabilize Iran through misinformation.

Over the past few days, Iran has witnessed protests across several major cities. Many shops have remained shut, streets have seen reduced activity, and daily life has been disrupted as demonstrators demand economic reforms and political change.
At the same time, strong pro-government rallies are also being held. In cities such as Kerman, thousands have taken to the streets to express support for Khamenei, chanting slogans in favour of the government. Some Iranian residents told NDTV that while inflation and economic pressure are real concerns, they do not oppose Khamenei personally. They believe that those protesting against the Supreme Leader are largely aligned with supporters of the ousted Shah Reza Pahlavi or are influenced by foreign adversaries.
Meanwhile, Islamic scholar Maulana Zamir Jafri from Qom noted that Khamenei recently addressed the nation on January 3, proving he remains fully active and present in Iran. “Life in Tehran is largely normal,” he said, urging international and Indian media to verify information before publishing sensationalised reports. “The report cited unnamed sources without evidence,” he added.
