Hurricane Season Heats Up: Forecasters Keep an Eye on Two Atlantic Systems, One of Which Could Be a Threat to the US
There are two tropical systems that forecasters are keeping an eye on. “Invest 97L” has a high chance of becoming a big storm that might affect the Caribbean and the U.S. East Coast.
Since June 1, the Atlantic hurricane season has officially begun. Forecasters are keeping a careful eye on two tropical systems that are now forming in the Atlantic Ocean. One of these, called Invest 97L, is causing a lot of worry since it has a good chance of turning into a hurricane, which may be dangerous for the United States.
What We Know About the Storms That Are Coming
There have been four named storms in the Atlantic so far this year. Tropical Storm Dexter, which formed in early August, was the most recent one to form. Erin, Fernand, and Gabrielle are the next three names on the list for the 2025 season. The hurricane season is at its busiest from mid-August to mid-September, with September 10 being the most active day.
Invest 97L: Weather experts say that Invest 97L has a good possibility of getting stronger. The National Hurricane Center says that “environmental conditions appear conducive for further development,” and by the middle to end of this week, it will probably turn into a tropical depression or storm. The system is now close to the Cabo Verde Islands, but the long-term forecast says it might move toward the Caribbean and then the East Coast of the United States. AccuWeather has said that this system might be the first big tropical threat of the season. People who live or travel in the Caribbean, U.S. East, and Gulf coasts should keep a close eye on its path.
Other Systems: There is also a second area of low pressure in the central Atlantic called Invest 96L. It is being watched, but it is less organized and less likely to become a storm as it advances north and away from land.
Being ready
Experts are stressing how important it is to be ready as the storm season reaches its peak. It’s still unclear what the exact course and strength of these storms will be, but Invest 97L has the potential to have a big effect, so those in vulnerable locations should have a plan in place.
