Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], May 23: In a bid to promote environmental awareness and conservation, the Jammu and Kashmir Biodiversity Council marked International Biodiversity Day with a special event at Tagore Hall, Srinagar, on Friday. The celebration witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, forest officials, academicians, and nature lovers.
Themed around educating the youth about the significance of biodiversity, the event included lectures by forest officials, biologists, columnists, and wildlife experts. They emphasized the devastating impacts of climate change and global warming, and the urgent need for robust biodiversity to secure ecological stability.
Speakers underlined the value of forests, mountains, meadows, and water bodies in maintaining the delicate balance of nature. The role of the ozone layer in protecting the planet from extreme heat was discussed in light of growing pollution and environmental degradation.
Students attending the event voiced a strong call for continuous environmental education, not just on designated days. “Biodiversity should be a priority every day, not just celebrated once a year,” said Alam Syed, a participant. He stressed the need for routine awareness campaigns in schools and colleges.
Another student remarked on how ozone layer depletion and rising pollution have worsened heatwaves and disturbed the ecosystem, reinforcing the importance of daily environmental practices.
Participants urged the government to conduct monthly environmental programs in educational institutions, making biodiversity awareness an ongoing part of the curriculum.
