‘Insult to President’: PM Modi Blasts Mamata Govt Over Protocol Lapses

The political temperature in West Bengal has reached a boiling point following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s stinging critique of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) administration.

Speaking on Sunday, March 8, 2026, the Prime Minister suggested that the people of Bengal are ready for a political overhaul, citing a recent “insult” to President Droupadi Murmu as a primary example of the state’s governance failures. The controversy stems from the President’s visit to Siliguri for the International Santal Conference, where she reportedly faced significant protocol lapses, including the absence of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee or any state ministers to receive her upon arrival.

The Prime Minister’s remarks come as the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has officially sought a detailed report from the West Bengal government. Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan has tasked the state’s Chief Secretary with explaining the last-minute venue changes, unauthorized route alterations, and the perceived lack of state representation during the President’s visit. PM Modi emphasized that such lapses not only disrespect the highest office in the land but also deeply hurt the sentiments of the Santhal community, of which the President is a proud member.

While President Murmu maintained a dignified stance, stating she “holds no grudges,” she did publicly question the decision to hold a major international gathering at a cramped venue, suggesting it limited public participation. With the Centre demanding a report by Sunday evening, the standoff marks a new low in the already fractured relationship between the TMC-led state government and the BJP-led Centre, setting a high-stakes tone for the upcoming political season in West Bengal.
