New Delhi [India]: The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has significantly bolstered healthcare infrastructure across India under the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (NP-NCD). The programme now includes:
- 770 District NCD Clinics
- 372 District Day Care Centres
- 233 Cardiac Care Units
- 6,410 Community Health Centre NCD Clinics
Key Highlights:
- Enhanced Access to Medicines and Devices:
- 2,047 types of medicines and 300 surgical devices for cardiovascular, anti-cancer, and anti-diabetic treatments are available under the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP).
- Over 14,000 Janaushadhi Kendras have been established to provide quality generic medicines at affordable prices.
- Integrated Care Under National Health Mission (NHM):
- Focus on early diagnosis, referrals, and treatment for NCDs, including cervical cancer.
- Screening and management of common NCDs incorporated into primary healthcare delivery.
- Affordable Healthcare for All:
- Under Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY):
- Health cover of ₹5 lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary care.
- Coverage expanded to all senior citizens aged 70 and above, irrespective of income.
- Under Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY):
- Focus on Awareness and Prevention:
- Technical and financial support provided to states and union territories to promote health awareness, prevent NCDs, and manage the disease burden.
The government aims to ensure free or heavily subsidized treatment for major NCDs in government hospitals, reaching the underserved population and addressing the growing burden of non-communicable diseases across the nation.
