IndiGo Flight From Delhi To Srinagar Hit By Hailstorm, Lands Safely Amid Sudden Weather Shift

New Delhi/Srinagar: IndiGo Airlines confirmed that flight 6E 2142, operating from Delhi to Srinagar, encountered a sudden hailstorm en route but landed safely at Srinagar airport on Wednesday evening. The airline said the crew followed all standard safety protocols, ensuring the safety and comfort of passengers onboard.

“IndiGo flight 6E 2142 operating from Delhi to Srinagar encountered sudden hailstorm en route. The flight and cabin crew followed established protocol and the aircraft landed safely in Srinagar. The airport team attended to the customers after arrival of the aircraft, prioritizing their wellbeing and comfort,” the airline said in an official statement.

The aircraft is currently undergoing inspection and maintenance before being cleared for its next flight.

Widespread Disruptions at Delhi Airport

The hailstorm that struck flight 6E 2142 was part of a larger weather event that caused disruptions across Delhi-NCR. Following several days of intense heat, the region experienced a sudden weather reversal on Wednesday evening, with heavy rains, hailstorms, and gusty winds sweeping across the capital and nearby areas.

Several domestic and international flights to and from Delhi Airport were delayed or diverted due to the severe weather.

“Many domestic and international flights to Delhi airport from various airports have been put on halt or diverted due to weather conditions,” confirmed airport sources.

Advisories Issued by Air India and Delhi Airport

In anticipation of the turbulent weather, Air India and Delhi Airport had earlier issued advisories on social media platform X, urging passengers to stay updated with their respective airlines.

“Rain and thunderstorms may disrupt flights to/from Delhi this evening,” warned Air India.

“Due to inclement weather conditions and thunderstorms, flight operations may be impacted at Delhi airport,” added Delhi Airport in its advisory.

Airport officials stated that on-ground teams were actively coordinating with all stakeholders to minimize disruptions and assist affected passengers.

IMD’s Weather Alert: Dust Storm, High-Speed Winds

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed that a cloud mass moved from North Delhi southwards, causing dust storms, heavy rains, and wind speeds of 50-60 kmph, gusting up to 70 kmph.

The storm brought significant relief from the scorching temperatures that had gripped the region over the past week, with temperatures exceeding 40°C.

Passenger Safety Prioritized

While weather-related flight disruptions are not uncommon during seasonal transitions, the incident involving IndiGo 6E 2142 serves as a reminder of the importance of strict adherence to aviation safety protocols. IndiGo’s swift handling and the safe landing were widely appreciated by passengers and aviation observers alike.
