New Delhi [India], June 7: As Prime Minister Narendra Modi prepares to attend the G7 summit in Canada, former Indian diplomat KP Fabian stated that India’s presence is indispensable for the effectiveness of discussions on global economy, security, and counter-terrorism.
“The G7 meeting, which discusses global economic challenges, security, war and peace, and terrorism, cannot be effective without India’s presence,” Fabian told ANI.
He praised Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney for extending an invitation to PM Modi, even if some might consider the gesture slightly delayed. “Carney has done the right thing,” Fabian said.
Fabian also noted that in light of Operation Sindoor, PM Modi is expected to raise the issue of terrorism during the summit. “Climate change and other global issues will be discussed, but terrorism must be given special focus. After incidents like Pahalgam, the West still hasn’t fully awakened to the threat,” he added.
Earlier, Canadian PM Mark Carney emphasized the significance of India’s participation, calling it essential for the summit’s success. He noted that India, as the world’s fifth-largest economy and most populous country, plays a critical role in shaping discussions on global matters.
“As G7 chair, we are addressing issues including energy security, the digital future, critical minerals, and infrastructure in the developing world. India must have a seat at the table,” Carney said.
He also highlighted India’s central role in global supply chains, reinforcing its strategic importance to G7 consultations.
The invitation comes amid efforts to repair strained diplomatic ties between India and Canada, following serious allegations last year. In June 2023, Canadian authorities accused Indian agents of involvement in the assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen and pro-Khalistan activist, outside a Sikh temple in Vancouver.
India strongly denied the allegations, and both countries expelled senior diplomats in a tit-for-tat move, escalating tensions.
The upcoming summit is seen as a potential opportunity for both nations to reset diplomatic engagement while addressing broader global challenges.
