Two Indian men who went to Singapore for a vacation were found guilty of robbing and beating sex workers in the city-state and are now going to jail. The men, who were charged with many crimes, said that their “financial suffering” was the reason they did what they did.
The two people who were accused were 23-year-old Arokkiyasami Daison and 27-year-old Rajendran Mayilarasan. The Straits Times says they got to Singapore from India on April 24.
The Planned Robbery Plot
The tourists were in Singapore’s Little India neighborhood when the incidents started. A man came up to them there and gave them the phone numbers of two sex workers, proposing that they hire them.
According to reports, Daison came up with the idea to rob the women and told his partner, Mayilarasan, about it.
The First Incident: The two men met the first woman in a hotel room on Jalan Besar on the same day they got there. People say that once the woman was inside, the men bound her hands and legs and hit her. They then robbed her, taking her jewelry, a bank card, $2,000 in cash, and her passport.
The Second Incident: Daison and Mayilarasan met with a second woman later that night. They dragged her when she got there and stole from her again. They took $800 in cash, two cell phones, and a passport from the second victim.
Finding out and sentencing
The second victim was able to tell another individual about what happened to her, and he then called the police.
During the mitigation process, Daison and Mayilarasan admitted their guilt and asked for shorter sentences and leniency, saying that they were in dire financial trouble back home.
Daison’s Plea: Daison told the police through an interpreter, “My father died last year.” I have three sisters, one of them is married, and we don’t have any money. That’s why we did this.
Mayilarasan’s Plea: Mayilarasan said, “My wife and child are alone in India.” They are having money problems.
The court condemned both Arokkiyasami Daison and Rajendran Mayilarasan to five years and one month in jail, even though they asked for leniency. Along with their prison sentences, both men also received 12 strokes of the cane as punishment.
