Indian Student Harsimrat Randhawa Killed By Stray Bullet In Ontario; Hamilton Police Launch Homicide Probe


Ontario [Canada], April 19: Harsimrat Randhawa, a 21-year-old Indian international student studying at Mohawk College in Hamilton, Ontario, tragically lost her life after being struck by a stray bullet during a shooting incident on Thursday evening, according to CBC News.

The Consulate General of India in Toronto confirmed her death on X (formerly Twitter), offering condolences and calling her an “innocent victim.”

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of Indian student Harsimrat Randhawa in Hamilton, Ontario… She was an innocent victim, fatally struck by a stray bullet during a shooting incident involving two vehicles,” read the statement.

The shooting occurred at around 7:30 PM near Upper James Street and South Bend Road. Randhawa was reportedly waiting at a bus stop on her way to work when she was shot in the chest. Emergency services transported her to the hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

According to Hamilton Police, surveillance footage revealed that the shots were fired from a black Mercedes SUV, targeting a white sedan. The two vehicles fled in different directions after the gunfire.

“Randhawa was an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire,” police said in a news release.

The incident endangered others in the neighborhood as well. Bullets reportedly struck a nearby home on Allenby Avenue while residents were inside watching television. Thankfully, no additional injuries were reported.

Mohawk College released a statement mourning the loss:

“Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this difficult time. This loss is being felt deeply by many in our college community.”

The Hamilton Police are actively investigating the homicide and have asked the public for help. Anyone with dashcam or security footage from 7:15 PM to 7:45 PM in the area is urged to contact authorities.

The Indian Consulate has pledged to provide full assistance to Randhawa’s family during this difficult time.
