Chicago [US]: The Consulate General of India in Chicago expressed deep sorrow over the untimely death of Praveen Kumar Gampa, an Indian student pursuing post-graduation at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
In a statement on Wednesday (local time), the Consulate assured that it is in contact with Gampa’s family and the university to provide all possible support. However, the cause of his death has not been disclosed yet.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the Consulate stated:
“We are saddened by the untimely death of Praveen Kumar Gampa, a postgraduate student at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The Consulate is in contact with Praveen’s family and the University, helping them with all possible support. Our heartfelt condolences and prayers are with his family and friends of the departed.”
This tragic incident comes months after the reported murder of another Indian student, Nukarapu Sai Teja, from Telangana in November 2024. Teja was killed outside a store in Chicago. The Consulate had then expressed shock and sorrow over the incident and demanded immediate action against the perpetrators.
In a post on X, the Consulate assured that all necessary assistance would be extended to Teja’s family and friends.
According to Talluri Srujan, the victim’s uncle, Sai Teja had moved to the United States for higher studies and was pursuing an MBA at Concordia University in Chicago after completing his BBA. He had also taken a part-time job to support his studies.
On the day of the incident, Teja went to a store where two suspects allegedly entered to commit a robbery. After complying with their demands and handing over the cash, Teja was reportedly shot outside the store. The suspects were described as two African American men.
The tragic deaths of these two young students have raised concerns among the Indian community in the United States. The Consulate continues to coordinate with local authorities to ensure justice for the victims and provide support to their families.
