Indian Railways Announces Compensation For Families Of New Delhi Railway Station Stampede Victims

Indian Railways has announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the families of those who lost their lives in the tragic stampede at New Delhi Railway Station. According to a release, Rs 2.5 lakh will be provided to those seriously injured, and Rs 1 lakh will be given to those with minor injuries.

Geeta, a worker at the LNJP hospital where the victims were admitted, shared that 15 bodies and 10 to 12 injured people were brought to the hospital at 10 p.m. “There were around 15 dead bodies and 10 to 12 injured people who were brought to the LNJP hospital between 10 to 10:30 p.m. yesterday. There were three children among the dead…” Geeta told media.

The tragic incident, which occurred around 10 p.m. on Saturday, resulted in the loss of 18 lives when thousands of devotees traveling to Prayagraj for the Maha Kumbh 2025 festival caused severe overcrowding at the station.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Railway, KPS Malhotra, explained that the incident occurred when many passengers gathered on platform no. 14, where the Prayagraj Express was stationed. Delays in the departures of the Swatantrata Senani Express and Bhubaneswar Rajdhani contributed to further congestion at platforms 12, 13, and 14.

President Droupadi Murmu expressed her deep anguish over the loss of lives in the stampede. She extended her heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.
