Indian Oil To Commission Green Hydrogen Plant In Panipat By 2027

Davos [Switzerland]: Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) is poised to make a significant leap in sustainability with the commissioning of its green hydrogen plant in Panipat, Haryana, within the next two years.

During the World Economic Forum 2025 in Davos, IOC Chairman Arvinder Singh Sahney revealed that the plant, which will produce 10,000 tons of green hydrogen annually, has made considerable progress.

“Green hydrogen plant is now alive. We have got very good bids for it. And now the tenders are under evaluation. Within a month or so, we will be able to award the job, and within two years, the 10,000 tons per annum green hydrogen plant at Panipat will be commissioned,” Sahney said in an exclusive conversation with ANI.

Boosting India’s Green Energy Mission

The Panipat facility represents a critical component of India’s push toward a sustainable and carbon-neutral future, aligning with its green energy mission.

Highlighting IOC’s advancements in the City Gas Distribution (CGD) sector, Sahney outlined the company’s commitment to expanding infrastructure.
“We have a very good chunk of CGD business that we are doing, and we are trying to develop infrastructure to the extent possible. We are focused on providing more connections to households, increasing the number of CNG stations, and enhancing the supply of piped natural gas (PNG),” he stated.

No Active Acquisition Plans

When asked about future acquisitions, Sahney clarified that while there are no immediate plans for acquisitions, IOC is focused on strengthening its existing operations to align with its sustainability goals.

Impact of Global Sanctions

Sahney also addressed concerns regarding the impact of American sanctions on Russia, stating that these measures are manageable for India.
“It is not a very difficult thing to handle because it has a very limited effect. Whatever sanctions are there, we are abiding by them,” he said.

Reiterating India’s diverse energy sourcing strategy, Sahney added, “India has multiple sources to meet its energy needs.”

A Greener Future

With its green hydrogen initiative and a robust CGD business strategy, Indian Oil continues to play a pivotal role in shaping India’s transition to a cleaner and greener energy landscape. The Panipat plant is expected to serve as a cornerstone for India’s green energy ambitions.
