Indian Idol 3 Winner Prashant Tamang Passes Away at 43

In a shocking start to the year for the music and film industry, Prashant Tamang, the beloved winner of Indian Idol Season 3 and a rising actor, passed away on the morning of Sunday, January 11, 2026. Tamang, who was only 43, reportedly suffered a sudden cardiac arrest at his residence in Janakpuri, Delhi.

He was rushed to a private hospital in Dwarka at approximately 9:00 AM, but was tragically declared dead on arrival. The news was first confirmed by his close friends, filmmaker Rajesh Ghatani and fellow singer Amit Paul, sending shockwaves through his hometown of Darjeeling and the global Gorkha community.

A Journey of Grit: From Police Constable to National Icon

Born in 1983 in Darjeeling, Prashant’s life was a testament to the power of dreams. Before becoming a household name, he served as a constable in the Kolkata Police and performed in the police orchestra.

His 2007 victory on Indian Idol was more than just a musical win; it was a cultural phenomenon that united the Northeast and the Gorkha community. Following his win, he released his debut album Dhanyavad and became a superstar in the Nepali film industry with blockbusters like Gorkha Paltan (2010) and Nishani (2014).

Expanding Horizons: ‘Paatal Lok 2’ and Salman Khan’s Next

In recent years, Prashant had successfully transitioned into the Indian digital space. He earned critical acclaim for his role as Daniel Lecho (an assassin/key character) in the second season of the Amazon Prime thriller Paatal Lok.

At the time of his death, he had recently finished filming for his big Bollywood break—Apoorva Lakhia’s Battle of Galwan, starring Salman Khan. The film, scheduled for release on April 17, 2026, will now serve as a posthumous tribute to his versatile talent.

Tributes Pour In

  • Mamata Banerjee (WB CM): “Saddened by the sudden and untimely demise… His roots in our Darjeeling hills and one-time association with Kolkata Police made him particularly dear to us in Bengal.”
  • Amit Paul (Runner-up, Indian Idol 3): “How’s it even fair!!! Keep smiling Dosti!!! The world won’t be the same without you!!! I still cannot process this.”
  • Temjen Imna Along (Nagaland Minister): “To me, Prashant was more than a talented artist; he was a dear friend… His humility and warmth always stood out.”

Prashant Tamang is survived by his wife, Geeta Thapa (referred to as Martha in some circles), and their four-year-old daughter, Ariah Tamang. His family is currently deciding whether the last rites will be performed in Delhi or if his body will be flown back to the Darjeeling hills he so dearly loved.
