Melbourne (Australia), February 13: The 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy between India and Australia set a new record for the number of Indian cricket fans travelling to Australia, as reported by cricket.com.au.
Ticket sales for the series saw an extraordinary surge, with over 6,000 Indian fans purchasing tickets directly from India, in addition to the many others who bought tickets through family and friends living in Australia. This represented a six-fold increase in ticket sales compared to the previous 2018/19 Border-Gavaskar Trophy hosted by Australia.
India led the charge in international ticket sales for this Australian cricket summer, outpacing countries like the UK and the USA. The Boxing Day Test at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground was a standout event, with over two-thirds of tickets sold to Indian fans.
In total, 837,879 people attended the series, making it the fourth most-attended Test series in Australia’s history, and the highest-attended non-Ashes series. Nearly 5% of ticket purchases came from overseas fans. The series also saw impressive TV viewership, with eight sessions averaging over 2 million viewers, and 40 sessions drawing over 1 million viewers.
Joel Morrison, Cricket Australia’s Executive General Manager of Events and Operations, expressed delight at the growing interest from Indian fans. He said, “We are delighted that Australia has become a pre-eminent destination for Indian cricket fans, fueled by the enormous interest in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series.”
He added, “The passion of Indian supporters helped enhance the electric atmosphere at every ground across the summer. We’re committed to deepening our relationship with cricket fans all over the world and enhancing the fan experience for both local and travelling fans alike.”
The surge in Indian cricket fans also highlighted the growing significance of Australian cricket in facilitating tourism and trade for the country. Looking ahead, Cricket Australia is already preparing for the Indian men’s cricket team’s tour of Australia in October-November 2025, which will feature three ODIs and five T20Is, and the Indian women’s team tour in February-March 2026, which will include a seven-match multi-format series.
These upcoming tours are expected to bring more excitement and attract even more passionate cricket fans to Australia, further cementing the country’s role as a major cricketing destination for international supporters.
