The Indian Embassy in Myanmar has successfully facilitated the repatriation of four more Indian nationals trapped in cyber-scam compounds in Myawaddy, taking the total number of rescued and repatriated victims to 36 so far.
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), the Embassy stated,
“We facilitated exit permit by Myanmar authorities for these 4 Indian nationals from Myawaddy compounds and repatriation through Yangon yesterday. We strongly advise against such job offers and entry/exit without border immigration in Myanmar/Thailand, which can restrict future entry.”
The latest group of four victims had been rescued from cybercrime networks and transported by Myanmar authorities from Hpa-An to Yangon, where they were handed over to Embassy representatives. The consular process and exit permits are now underway to bring them home.
This comes days after 32 Indians were repatriated on April 10, also victims of fraudulent job rackets operating in the Myawaddy region, an area near the Thailand-Myanmar border that has emerged as a hotspot for scam operations.
Reiterating its warning, the Embassy said,
“We re-emphasise our advice against such job offers and caution that entry/exit without border immigration in Myanmar/Thailand is illegal and can lead to future entry restrictions.”
Myawaddy, located opposite Thailand’s Mae Sot, has been described as the “global capital of scams” by Thai opposition MP Rangsiman Rome, according to a Voice of America report from February. The report warned that scam operations continue to thrive in the region due to easy access to SIM cards, Starlink satellites, electricity, and human resources.
The Indian Embassy in Thailand has also been issuing regular advisories cautioning Indian citizens about accepting dubious employment offers, particularly those that involve crossing into Myanmar illegally.
The Indian diplomatic missions in Myanmar and Thailand continue working closely with local authorities to safeguard Indian nationals and ensure timely intervention in such distressing situations.
