Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], April 4 : The Indian film industry is grieving the loss of veteran actor, director, and filmmaker Manoj Kumar, who passed away at the age of 87. Affectionately known as “Bharat Kumar” for his iconic portrayals of patriotic characters, he breathed his last at 4:03 am on April 4, 2025, at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai.
His son, Kunal Goswami, confirmed that the last rites will be performed tomorrow at 11 am at Pawan Hans, in front of Nanavati Hospital, Vile Parle.
Tributes Pour In for the Cinematic Legend
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences in a heartfelt message on X (formerly Twitter), stating:
“Deeply saddened by the passing of legendary actor and filmmaker Shri Manoj Kumar Ji. He was an icon of Indian cinema, remembered for his patriotic zeal reflected in his films. Manoj Ji’s works ignited a spirit of national pride and will continue to inspire generations. My thoughts are with his family and admirers in this hour of grief. Om Shanti.”
Kumar’s cousin, Manish R Goswami, described him as “a true countryman, a true Indian,” emphasizing how his films often highlighted national issues. Kunal Goswami also acknowledged PM Modi’s message, expressing gratitude and reflecting on how films like Upkar, Purab Aur Paschim, and Roti Kapda Aur Makaan remain relevant in contemporary society.
A Cinematic Icon’s Legacy
Manoj Kumar’s illustrious career was marked by numerous accolades, including the Padma Shri (1992) and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award (2015) for his immense contributions to Indian cinema. He also won seven Filmfare Awards across various categories.
His films resonated deeply with audiences, celebrating themes of patriotism, integrity, and national unity. Even today, his work continues to inspire filmmakers, actors, and cinephiles alike.
Cause of Death and Health Struggles
Kumar passed away due to cardiogenic shock following an acute myocardial infarction. He had also been battling decompensated liver cirrhosis for several months, which had deteriorated his health. Admitted to the hospital on February 21, 2025, he had been under continuous medical care since then.
