Indian Cinema Mourns The Loss Of Iconic Actor-Filmmaker Manoj Kumar at 87

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], April 4: The Indian film industry and the nation mourn the passing of Manoj Kumar, one of the most beloved and iconic figures in Indian cinema, who died at the age of 87 in Mumbai.

The actor, director, and symbol of patriotic storytelling in Bollywood breathed his last at 4:03 am on April 4, 2025, at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, after battling a prolonged illness.

🕊️ Family and Nation Pay Tribute

His son Kunal Goswami confirmed the heartbreaking news, saying:

“He was unwell for a long time, but he overcame everything with great intensity. It is God’s grace that he passed away peacefully.”
He added that the cremation will be held on Saturday, April 5, and recalled how Manoj Kumar found joy in the presence of his grandsons and loved ones during his final days.

His cousin, Manish R Goswami, shared an emotional tribute:

“This is the end of an era of a true Indian and true patriotism. The era of making movies on patriotism has ended today.”

🧡 A Patriot On and Off the Screen

Born Harikrishan Goswami on July 24, 1937, in Abbottabad (now in Pakistan), he adopted the screen name Manoj Kumar and became widely revered as “Bharat Kumar” for his legendary roles in films that exuded nationalism and pride.

Some of his most celebrated films include:

  • Upkar (1967) – Also his directorial debut, winning the National Film Award
  • Purab Aur Paschim (1970)
  • Roti Kapda Aur Makaan (1974)
  • Shaheed (1965), where he portrayed freedom fighter Bhagat Singh

  • Padma Shri (1992) for his contribution to Indian arts
  • Dadasaheb Phalke Award (2015) – India’s highest cinematic honor
  • 7 Filmfare Awards across his career

Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted on social media:

“Deeply saddened by the passing of legendary actor and filmmaker Shri Manoj Kumar Ji… His works ignited a spirit of national pride and will continue to inspire generations.”

With a cinematic career spanning decades, Manoj Kumar’s work resonated deeply with themes of duty, sacrifice, and love for the nation. His storytelling not only entertained but shaped the consciousness of a generation.

He eventually stepped back from films and joined politics, aligning with the Bharatiya Janata Party in the 2004 general elections.


An era has indeed come to an end. As the curtains fall on the life of a legend, his films, vision, and spirit will remain etched in the hearts of millions.
