Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir) [India]: In the wake of heightened tensions following the deadly April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam that left 26 civilians dead, the Indian Army has responded to unprovoked ceasefire violations by Pakistani forces along the Line of Control (LoC) during the night of May 5 into the early hours of May 6.
According to an official statement from the Indian Army, Pakistani troops initiated unprovoked small-arms fire from across the LoC in multiple sectors, including Kupwara, Baramulla, Poonch, Rajouri, Mendhar, Naushera, Sunderbani, and Akhnoor.
“During the night of 05-06 May 2025, Pakistan Army resorted to unprovoked small-arms firing from posts across the Line of Control… Indian Army responded in a proportionate manner,” the statement read.
This marks the twelfth consecutive day of Indian retaliation since the latest round of unprovoked firing by Pakistan began on the night of April 25–26.
The Indian Army had also responded to similar incidents on the night of May 4–5, following a series of ceasefire violations by Pakistani forces across the same sectors.
Airspace Closure and Diplomatic Talks
In a significant move reflecting rising tensions, India closed its airspace to all Pakistani-registered and operated aircraft from April 30 to May 23, according to a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) issued by the Ministry of Civil Aviation. The restrictions extend to military, civilian, and leased aircraft and were imposed following the Pahalgam terror attack.
On April 29, the Director Generals of Military Operations (DGMOs) of India and Pakistan communicated via a hotline to address the ongoing ceasefire violations. Indian defence sources said the Indian side issued a firm warning to Pakistan, urging an end to the provocations along both the LoC and the International Border.
The latest developments underscore a significant deterioration in cross-border relations, with India continuing to maintain a policy of calibrated and proportionate military responses to ceasefire violations while asserting its right to defend civilian lives and territorial sovereignty.
