India endured a shaky start but recovered strongly thanks to a resilient innings from captain Suryakumar Yadav, who guided the team to 162/9 against the United States in their T20 World Cup 2026 Group A match at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday night.
After losing the toss, India were put in to bat on a two-paced surface and suffered an early collapse in the powerplay. The hosts slumped to 46 for 4, with opener Abhishek Sharma dismissed for a golden duck by Ali Khan. USA pacer Shadley van Schalkwyk struck three times in the final over of the powerplay to leave India in serious trouble.
The USA bowlers kept the pressure on with regular wickets through the middle overs, restricting India’s scoring rate and tightening the noose. However, Suryakumar Yadav played a fighting knock, scoring an unbeaten 84 off 49 balls, stabilising the innings and pushing India to a respectable total on a tricky wicket.
Despite wickets falling around him, Suryakumar found boundaries consistently and anchored the innings, ensuring India crossed the 150-run mark — a competitive total given the conditions.
Toss Update
USA captain Monank Patel won the toss and elected to bowl first, aiming to exploit the early conditions under lights at Wankhede.
