India will field its largest-ever contingent for the 3rd edition of the India Open BWF World Tour Super 750, set to take place from January 14-19, 2025, in New Delhi. The tournament, which has become a prestigious fixture on the global badminton calendar, will feature an exciting lineup of top players including Olympic champions Viktor Axelsen, An Se Young, and world number one Shi Yuqi. The competition promises to be a thrilling showcase of world-class badminton.
The India Open, organized by the Badminton Association of India (BAI), was elevated to Super 750 status in 2023 as part of the BWF World Tour. With a prize pool of USD 950,000 and 11,000 ranking points for the champions, the tournament has drawn global attention. It will be held at the KD Jadhav Indoor Hall, Indira Gandhi Stadium, New Delhi.
India’s contingent for this edition is its largest ever, with 21 entries across various categories: Men’s Singles (3), Women’s Singles (4), Men’s Doubles (2), Women’s Doubles (8), and Mixed Doubles (4). This marks a significant step forward for Indian badminton, showcasing the rise of Indian players on the international stage. Sanjay Mishra, General Secretary of the BAI, emphasized that the 2025 India Open is a clear reflection of how Indian players are carving a place for themselves among the best in the world.
In previous editions, India had 14 entries each. The 2025 tournament will see a stronger Indian presence, with stars like 2022 Men’s Singles champion Lakshya Sen, two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu, Chirag Shetty, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, and HS Prannoy leading the charge. After reaching the men’s doubles final and the men’s singles semifinals in 2024, India hopes to build on those performances and vie for the prestigious title.
The field will also feature top players from around the world, including China’s Liang Weikeng and Wang Chang (Paris Olympics silver medallists), Malaysia’s Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik (bronze medallists), Denmark’s Kim Astrup and Anders Rasmussen, and Indonesia’s Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto. While the competition will be intense, fans will eagerly watch the performance of Chirag and Satwik, especially as Satwik makes his return after an injury layoff.
The 2025 India Open is shaping up to be a highly competitive event, with only two players from the top 20 in men’s singles absent. The women’s singles draw will feature 14 of the top 20 players, making it a highly anticipated event for badminton fans around the world.
