India to Implement Nationwide AI-Based Toll Collection by 2026: Nitin Gadkari

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari informed the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday that India’s highways are set for a technological overhaul. By the end of 2026, a new AI-driven, multi-lane free flow (MLFF) toll system will be fully operational across the country, effectively eliminating physical toll plazas and wait times for commuters.

This transition from the current FASTag system to a barrier-less, satellite-linked model aims to create a “zero-minute” wait experience on national highways.

🚀 Key Highlights of the New AI-System

The Minister detailed how the technology will revolutionize road travel and government transparency:

  • Barrier-Free Movement: Vehicles will no longer need to stop. The system is designed to allow cars to cross toll points at speeds of up to 80 km per hour.
  • Advanced Recognition: The system utilizes a combination of satellite tracking, AI-driven number plate recognition, and existing FASTag data to calculate and deduct tolls automatically.
  • Efficiency Gains: While FASTag reduced wait times to 60 seconds, the new MLFF system aims for zero stoppage, significantly reducing fuel consumption and travel time.

📊 Economic and Environmental Impact

The nationwide implementation is expected to deliver substantial financial benefits:

CategoryProjected Benefit
Fuel Savings₹1,500 crore saved annually due to zero idling.
Government RevenueProjected increase of ₹6,000 crore.
Previous GainsFASTag already boosted income by ₹5,000 crore.
TransparencyElimination of toll theft and manual corruption.

🔍 Clarification on Jurisdiction

Minister Gadkari emphasized that the central government is exclusively responsible for national highways. He noted that many complaints on social media regarding traffic or mismanagement often pertain to state highways or city roads, which are under the jurisdiction of state and local authorities, not the Union Ministry.

The goal remains to make the national highway infrastructure 100% transparent, corruption-free, and as efficient as global standards by the 2026 deadline.
