The Department of Posts in India has announced that all mail services to the US will be put on hold for a short period beginning on August 25. This decision was made because the US government has issued a new directive that would levy taxes on more things.
Executive Order No. 14324, which the US government put out, will start on August 29. This is what made the move happen. The regulation does away with the “de minimis” exception, which used to let items worth less than $800 enter the US without paying customs duties. So, any piece of mail that comes to the US from another country, no matter how much it costs, will now have to pay customs fees. You can’t send letters, papers, or presents worth more than $100.
The Department of Posts said that the prohibition was “unavoidable” since planes and ships going to the US declared they couldn’t carry mail. They added that US Customs and Border Protection now requires a clear means to collect duties and communicate data.
This is part of a larger response that is happening all throughout the world. Reports claim that a number of national postal services throughout the world are also suspending sending packages to the US because they are worried about the same things and the US government hasn’t been clear about what to do.
The Department of Posts has told customers that it is working to fix the situation and will start giving full services again as soon as possible. Customers who have already ordered products that can’t be transported to the US will get their shipping money returned.
