“Heartfelt tribute and salute to all the immortal brave soldiers martyred in the cowardly terrorist attack in Pulwama! The sacrifice of the brave sons of Mother India inspires us to fight unitedly against terrorism. Jai Hind,” he wrote on X.
The Pulwama attack, one of the deadliest terrorist incidents in India’s recent history, occurred on February 14, 2019, when a suicide bomber drove an IED-laden vehicle into a CRPF convoy, resulting in the deaths of 40 soldiers.
In retaliation, the Indian Air Force conducted precision airstrikes on Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terror camps in Pakistan’s Balakot on February 26, 2019. These strikes eliminated a “large number” of terrorists and severely damaged their operational infrastructure.
The following day, Pakistan attempted a counteroffensive against Indian military installations in Jammu and Kashmir. However, swift action by the Indian Air Force thwarted these efforts. During the aerial engagement, Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, piloting a MiG-21 Bison, pursued Pakistani fighter jets into Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). His aircraft was shot down, and he was taken into custody by Pakistan. However, in a significant diplomatic victory for India, he was repatriated on March 1, 2019.
The Pulwama attack and its aftermath significantly shaped India’s national security policies and reinforced the government’s approach toward counter-terrorism. The nation continues to honor the sacrifices of its soldiers, ensuring their bravery and dedication remain etched in history.
