India-Pakistan Tensions Escalate After Pahalgam Attack; Sharif Warns Of “Act Of War” Over Indus Treaty Move

Islamabad [Pakistan], April 24: The diplomatic fallout from the Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed the lives of 25 Indians and 1 Nepali citizen, has deepened as Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired a meeting of the National Security Committee (NSC) and issued retaliatory warnings to India.

In a statement from the Pakistani Prime Minister’s Office, the NSC declared that any Indian attempt to divert or suspend water flows guaranteed under the Indus Waters Treaty would be considered an “Act of War”. Pakistan also announced plans to take its grievance to international legal forums.

Sharif’s government further declared a suspension of bilateral agreements with India, including the historic Simla Agreement, and has announced the closure of the Wagah Border Post. Additionally, Pakistan’s airspace will now be closed to all Indian-owned or Indian-operated airlines.

These moves come in direct response to India’s strong retaliatory measures announced by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, including:

  1. Suspension of the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty
  2. Immediate closure of the integrated Attari Check Post
  3. Revocation of SAARC visa exemptions for Pakistani nationals
  4. Expulsion of Pakistan’s defence, naval, and air attaches from New Delhi
  5. India’s own military attaches in Islamabad to return and posts annulled

Amid rising tensions, Prime Minister Narendra Modi issued a powerful message from Bihar’s Madhubani district during National Panchayati Raj Day. Observing a moment of silence for the victims, PM Modi vowed relentless pursuit of justice:

“India will identify, track, and punish every terrorist, their handlers, and their backers. We will pursue them to the end of the earth.”

He emphasized that India’s national resolve would remain unbroken, asserting:

“The spirit of 140 crore Indians will break the back of terror. Those responsible for Pahalgam will face punishment greater than they can imagine.”

PM Modi also acknowledged the global support received from foreign leaders, expressing gratitude to the international community for standing with India in the face of terrorism.
