India Now Accounts For 46% Of Global Digital Transactions, Says Scindia On World Wi-Fi Day

New Delhi, June 24: Union Minister for Communications and Development of the Northeastern Region, Jyotiraditya Scindia, on World Wi-Fi Day, underscored India’s emergence as a global leader in digital technology and telecom innovation. He emphasized Wi-Fi’s transformative role in connecting people, eliminating barriers, and driving inclusive development.

“Wi-Fi is an invisible force powering visible change,” Scindia said while addressing a special event on the occasion. “It gives us the freedom to connect, to create, and to rise.”

India’s Telecom Milestone: Indigenous 4G Technology

Highlighting India’s technological achievements, the minister proudly noted that India has developed its own 4G telecom stack, joining an elite global group. The indigenous 4G stack is the result of collaboration between public and private firms such as C-DOT, Tejas Networks, and TCS.

“We have become only the fifth country in the world to develop home-grown telecom technology,” Scindia noted.

Digital Transactions: India Leads the World

Scindia revealed a stunning statistic: India now accounts for 46% of all global digital transactions, outpacing economic giants like the United States, China, and Europe.

“Not the US, not China, not Europe—but India leads the digital transaction space globally,” he said.

Rural-First 5G Rollout Strategy

Breaking the urban-first trend, Scindia announced that India’s 5G use case development is beginning in rural areas—specifically, 13 villages across states like Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.

“We’re starting with 5G use cases in the villages, not the cities,” he said, highlighting the government’s commitment to digital inclusivity.

World Wi-Fi Day: Celebrating Digital Empowerment

World Wi-Fi Day, observed annually on June 20, aims to bridge the digital divide. Scindia said it celebrates more than just technology—it celebrates the removal of systemic barriers to information and opportunity.
