India joined the world in mourning the passing of Pope Francis, the 266th Supreme Pontiff of the Catholic Church, who died at age 88 at his residence, Casa Santa Marta, in Vatican City on Monday.
In a heartfelt tribute, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath offered condolences, describing the Pope’s death as “an irreparable loss to the spiritual world.”
“His Holiness Pope Francis will always be remembered for his compassion, humility, and noble spirit of service,” the CM’s statement read, concluding with a prayer: “Om Shanti.”
India Declares Three-Day State Mourning
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) announced that India will observe State Mourning on April 22, 23, and on the day of the funeral, as a mark of respect. The national flag will be flown at half-mast, and no official entertainment will be held during this period.
PM Modi, Jaishankar Lead National Tribute
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who met Pope Francis during the G7 Summit in Italy, recalled him as “a beacon of compassion, humility and spiritual courage.”
“Pope Francis’ affection for the people of India will always be cherished. He devoted his life to the ideals of Lord Christ and served the poor with unwavering dedication,” Modi said on X.
External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar also shared his condolences, remembering the Pope for his compassion and global vision:
“His compassion and commitment to building a better world defined his papacy. May his soul rest in peace.”
Global Legacy and Next Steps
Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Pope Francis became the first Jesuit and Latin American Pope in 2013 after the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI. His papacy focused on themes of mercy, environmental stewardship, and social justice.
The Vatican has declared a nine-day mourning period, known as “Novendiale,” an ancient tradition of prayer and remembrance. Afterward, a Conclave of Cardinals will convene to elect the next Pope.
