India Launches Operation Brahma To Aid Myanmar After Devastating Earthquake

New Delhi [India]: In a swift humanitarian response to the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar on Friday, India has deployed two C-17 aircraft carrying a 118-member Indian Army Field Hospital Unit along with 60 tonnes of relief material under Operation Brahma.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, provided details about the mission, highlighting that the unit also includes Women and Child Care services. India’s prompt action underscores its role as a first responder in regional crises, reaffirming its commitment to humanitarian assistance.

India’s Rapid Relief Efforts

In a post on X, Jaiswal stated:
“#OperationBrahma continues. Two C-17 aircraft with 118 members of the Indian Army Field Hospital Unit, including Women & Child Care services and 60 tonnes of relief material, have landed in Myanmar. With these, five relief flights have landed in Myanmar today.”

Additionally, a second C-130 aircraft arrived in Naypyitaw carrying the remaining 38 personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) along with 10 tonnes of relief material.

Further reinforcements are on the way, with the MEA confirming that two C-17 aircraft carrying 60 Para Field Ambulances will arrive shortly.

Medical Aid and Support

As part of the relief operation, the Indian Army will set up a 60-bed Medical Treatment Centre to provide trauma care, emergency surgeries, and essential medical assistance. The facility aims to bolster Myanmar’s healthcare system, which has been severely impacted by the disaster.

Earlier, India dispatched the first tranche of humanitarian aid from Hindon Air Force Station, ensuring urgent medical and relief supplies reached affected areas at the earliest.

Devastating Impact of the Earthquake

The 7.7 magnitude earthquake has caused massive destruction, with Myanmar’s military junta confirming 694 deaths and 1,670 injuries in the Mandalay region, which was near the earthquake’s epicenter.

According to reports from CNN, 68 people remain missing, while early modeling by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) suggests that the final death toll could exceed 10,000.

India’s continued assistance reflects its solidarity with Myanmar during this crisis, reinforcing its commitment to humanitarian aid and disaster relief efforts in the region.
