India Focuses on Strengthening Border Infrastructure to Enhance Security: MHA

New Delhi (India), March 25: The Indian government is fully committed to enhancing security along international borders by constructing and modernizing critical infrastructure, including fencing, border outposts, floodlights, and roads. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) informed the Lok Sabha about these efforts on Tuesday, emphasizing the government’s focus on border security.

Union Minister of State (MoS) for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai provided the information in a written response to questions about potential delays in border infrastructure projects due to funding shortages and inter-agency disputes. Rai assured that the government is actively working to ensure the timely completion of these projects, especially along sensitive borders like India-Pakistan and India-Bangladesh.

“The government of India is committed to the construction and modernization of critical border infrastructure to enhance security along international borders,” said the MoS. “The Ministry conducts regular reviews with executing agencies and State Governments/UT Administrations to ensure timely completion of border infrastructure projects.”

In addition to regular reviews, the MoS highlighted that dedicated State-Level Steering Committees periodically review the progress of border infrastructure along the India-Pakistan and India-Bangladesh borders to facilitate smooth execution.

Addressing a second question about vulnerabilities compromising national security, Nityanand Rai outlined a comprehensive approach to strengthen border security. This includes detailed vulnerability mapping, the deployment of additional manpower, and the use of specialized surveillance equipment at strategic locations. The government has also implemented round-the-clock patrolling, anti-tunneling exercises, and the installation of border floodlights and security fences as part of its robust security measures.

Earlier, Nityanand Rai reported that between January 1, 2024, and January 31, 2025, a total of 2,601 Bangladeshis were apprehended at the border.
