India Face Historic Chase At Lord’s: Can They Rewrite Test History?

London [UK], July 13: As India readies for a challenging fourth-innings run chase at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground, history provides both a daunting reminder and a glimmer of inspiration.

Often dubbed the “Home of Cricket,” Lord’s has witnessed only a handful of successful fourth-innings chases. India, notably, has achieved this feat just once—back in 1986—when they chased down 134 against England. In that memorable match, Kapil Dev starred with five wickets and helped secure the 136/5 victory, still India’s only successful chase at the venue.

The highest successful fourth-innings chase at Lord’s remains West Indies’ dramatic pursuit of 342 in 1984. Gordon Greenidge delivered a legendary performance, hammering 214 runs off 242 balls, including 29 boundaries and two sixes.

Chases exceeding 250 runs are rare at this ground. England managed it twice—most notably in 2004, when they chased 282 against New Zealand with Andrew Strauss playing a key role. More recently, South Africa matched that mark in the 2025 World Test Championship Final, overcoming Australia with Aiden Markram’s composed 136-run innings.

In 2022, England chased 277 against New Zealand, led by Joe Root’s unbeaten 115. Going further back, a chase of 216 in 1965 saw England successfully reach 218/3, with Ted Dexter contributing 80.

As India now prepare to bat fourth at Lord’s once again, they face a monumental challenge. With England ending Day 3 at 2/0 after India matched their total of 387, the game is delicately poised. Early breakthroughs with the ball and disciplined bowling will be key if India hopes to rewrite the history books at this iconic venue.
