India Expresses “Deep Concern” Over US Capture of Venezuela’s Maduro

India on Sunday expressed “deep concern” following the dramatic military operation by United States forces that resulted in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. In its first formal response to the escalation, New Delhi called for a peaceful resolution through dialogue to ensure regional stability.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a statement on Sunday afternoon, noting that it is “closely monitoring the evolving situation” in the South American nation.

“India reaffirms its support to the well-being and safety of the people of Venezuela. We call upon all concerned to address issues peacefully through dialogue, ensuring peace and stability of the region,” the MEA stated.

Key Developments in the Crisis

  • The Capture: Early Saturday morning, US forces—reportedly including elite Delta Force units—launched a large-scale strike on Caracas. President Donald Trump confirmed that Maduro and his wife were seized from a fortified compound at the Fort Tiuna military base and flown to New York to face narco-terrorism charges.
  • US Administration: At a press conference in Mar-a-Lago, President Trump stated that the US would “run” Venezuela temporarily until a “proper and judicious transition” takes place. He also indicated that major US oil companies would be deployed to rehabilitate Venezuela’s infrastructure.
  • Global Reaction: The move has polarized the international community. While Russia and China condemned the act as “armed aggression” and a violation of international law, several Latin American nations expressed outrage. Domestically, US politicians are divided, with some Democrats calling the raid an “unlawful act of war.”

Safety of Indian Nationals

The MEA has prioritized the safety of the small Indian community in Venezuela, which consists of approximately 50 non-resident Indians (NRIs) and 30 people of Indian origin (PIOs).

  1. Travel Advisory: On Saturday, India issued an advisory urging its citizens to avoid all non-essential travel to Venezuela.
  2. Emergency Contact: Indians currently in the country have been advised to exercise extreme caution, restrict their movements, and maintain constant contact with the Indian Embassy in Caracas.
  3. Ongoing Support: The embassy remains in touch with community members and has established emergency helplines to provide assistance as the situation unfolds.
