New Delhi/London : The upcoming India-England five-match Test series, scheduled to begin on November 20, will now be contested for a newly renamed trophy — the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy — a tribute to two of the game’s greatest icons, James Anderson and Sachin Tendulkar.
Historically, the series had two different trophies depending on the host nation:
- In India: The Anthony de Mello Trophy
- In England: The Pataudi Trophy
The unified Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy was originally set to be unveiled on Day 4 of the WTC Final between Australia and South Africa at Lord’s. However, the unveiling has been postponed in the wake of the tragic Air India flight crash in Ahmedabad, which claimed 241 lives.
“Given the tragic events in India, the announcement may wait a while out of respect (for the lives lost),” a senior ECB official told Cricbuzz.
“The BCCI is still deciding on the right time for the announcement,” the official added.
A minute’s silence was observed at Lord’s before the third day’s play in the WTC final, which South Africa went on to win by five wickets, defeating Australia in a historic finish.
