India has officially denied a recent news report claiming that a letter from Chinese President Xi Jinping to Indian President Droupadi Murmu helped ease tensions between the two countries. The report suggested the letter was a crucial step in the diplomatic thaw.
Speaking at a regular briefing on Friday in New Delhi, Randhir Jaiswal, the spokesman for India’s Ministry of External Affairs, addressed the issue directly. “We have seen the report and can confirm that the story of the letter is incorrect,” Jaiswal stated, without providing further details.
The news story, originally reported by Bloomberg News last week, cited an unnamed Indian official. According to the report, Xi had sent an unpublished letter to President Murmu in March to gauge India’s interest in improving bilateral relations.
The denial comes just days after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Xi Jinping during his first trip to China in seven years. The meeting, which was seen as a significant step in mending ties, concluded with both leaders publicly pledging to strengthen relations and work as partners rather than rivals.
