Birmingham [UK], July 7: Team India scripted history with a record-breaking 336-run victory over England at Edgbaston, marking their first-ever Test win at the iconic Birmingham venue and leveling the five-match series 1-1. The dominant performance saw Indian skipper Shubman Gill and pacer Akash Deep emerge as the heroes in what is now hailed as one of India’s greatest overseas Test triumphs.
Leading from the front, Shubman Gill smashed 269 in the first innings and 161 in the second, amassing a stunning match total of 430 runs. Meanwhile, Akash Deep delivered a dream performance, claiming a ten-wicket match haul—including 6/99 in the second innings—to dismantle England’s batting twice.
Celebrating the win, Gill posted on X, “Be in love with the grind and the game will give back.” Teammates shared their excitement on social media as well: KL Rahul wrote, “One for the record books, Edgbaston,” while Yashasvi Jaiswal posted, “Wonderful game really enjoyed it everything with everyone.” Akash Deep added, “History made at Edgbaston—grit, glory, and a game we’ll never forget. Serving the nation with pride.”
The match saw India pile up 587 in the first innings, thanks to crucial partnerships featuring Gill, Ravindra Jadeja (89), and Washington Sundar (42). Despite a strong counterattack from England’s Harry Brook (158) and Jamie Smith (184*), India’s bowlers, spearheaded by Siraj (6/70) and Akash Deep, secured a 180-run lead.
In the second innings, India declared at 427/6, setting England a near-impossible 608-run target. England’s batting collapsed to 271 all out, sealing India’s emphatic win.
The victory sets up a thrilling remainder of the series, with momentum firmly back in India’s favor as they prepare for the third Test at Lord’s.
