A commanding all-round performance sees India secure the Champions Trophy 2025 with a four-wicket victory in Dubai
Dubai, March 9, 2025 – India lifted their third ICC Champions Trophy, overcoming New Zealand by four wickets in a thrilling final at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. A captain’s knock from Rohit Sharma (76), Shreyas Iyer’s vital 48, and a spin masterclass led by Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy ensured India’s triumphant night.
“This win is special. The team showed great composure, and lifting the trophy after 12 years feels incredible,” said an elated Rohit Sharma post-match.
India’s Chase: A Rollercoaster Finish
Chasing 252 for victory, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill provided a strong start, putting up a 105-run opening stand. Rohit’s aggressive intent saw him bring up his fifty in 41 balls, striking five fours and three sixes.
However, New Zealand’s spinners brought them back into the contest, with Gill (31), Kohli (1), and Rohit (76) falling in quick succession.
🔹 Shreyas Iyer (48) and Axar Patel (29) steadied the innings, but India still needed 69 off 69 balls when Iyer departed.
🔹 KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya rotated the strike well, bringing the equation down to 32 off 30 before Hardik’s dismissal for 18 momentarily tilted the game.
🔹 Ravindra Jadeja, cool under pressure, smashed the winning boundary, securing India’s first ICC trophy since 2013.
Spin Brilliance Sets Up India’s Win
Earlier, India’s spin attack proved decisive, restricting New Zealand to 251/7. Varun Chakravarthy (2/45) and Kuldeep Yadav (2/40) led the charge, while Jadeja (1/30) and Axar Patel (0/29 in 8 overs) applied relentless pressure.
🔹 Rachin Ravindra (37) and Daryl Mitchell (63) fought hard, but the Kiwis struggled for momentum.
🔹 Michael Bracewell’s late flourish (53 off 40)* ensured New Zealand posted a competitive total.
🔹 Mohammed Shami (1/74) was expensive but removed Mitchell late in the innings.
India’s Dominance in ICC Champions Trophy
With this victory, India now holds three ICC Champions Trophy titles:
🏆 2002 (Shared with Sri Lanka)
🏆 2013 (Under MS Dhoni)
🏆 2025 (Under Rohit Sharma)
A perfect blend of experience and youth, backed by an exceptional bowling performance and composed batting, delivered India their long-awaited ICC silverware.
