India on Saturday urged all stakeholders in West Asia to exercise restraint and avoid further escalation following US and Israeli military strikes on Iran. New Delhi emphasised dialogue and diplomacy as the only viable path to de-escalate tensions, while stressing the need to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states.
The response came hours after the US and Israeli forces targeted Tehran and other Iranian cities. In retaliation, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched missiles and drones targeting Israel and US-linked military facilities in Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.
In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs said it was “deeply concerned” about the developments in Iran and the Gulf region. “We urge all sides to exercise restraint, avoid escalation, and prioritise the safety of civilians. Dialogue and diplomacy should be pursued to de-escalate tensions and address underlying issues,” the statement read.
The ministry added that Indian missions in the region are in close contact with Indian nationals and have issued advisories asking them to remain vigilant and follow local security guidance.
External affairs minister S Jaishankar held conversations with his counterparts in Israel, Iran and Gulf countries. After speaking with Israeli foreign minister Gideon Sa’ar, Jaishankar reiterated India’s call for dialogue. He also shared India’s concerns during discussions with Iranian foreign minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi.
Jaishankar additionally spoke with foreign ministers from Bahrain, Qatar, the UAE and Kuwait, focusing on regional stability and the safety of the Indian community. He said he appreciated the assurances given regarding the well-being of Indian nationals.
