India Reiterates Call For Dialogue Amid Israel-Iran Conflict At SCO Summit

New Delhi: India has reiterated its consistent stance on the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict, emphasizing the importance of dialogue and diplomacy to de-escalate tensions. The statement came as the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), led by China, took a firmer tone and “strongly condemned” Israeli airstrikes on Iran.

While distancing itself from the harsher language of the SCO declaration, India emphasized a balanced approach.

“India’s position on the matter had been articulated on June 13, and remains the same,” said the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in an official statement.

“We urge that channels of dialogue and diplomacy be utilised to work towards de-escalation, and it is essential that the international community undertake endeavours in that direction,” the MEA added.

India’s position reflects its broader foreign policy approach of strategic neutrality and multi-alignment, especially in a geopolitically sensitive region.

Background

Tensions between Israel and Iran have surged after Israeli airstrikes reportedly targeted Iranian nuclear and military infrastructure, prompting retaliatory missile attacks by Tehran. The conflict has drawn strong international reactions, including from members of the SCO.

India’s call for restraint comes amid its growing engagement with both West Asian powers and the SCO bloc, as it seeks to balance strategic relationships without aligning with any one side.
