Dhaka [Bangladesh]: India and Bangladesh are set to engage in crucial diplomatic talks as Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri prepares to visit Dhaka. The visit comes against the backdrop of recent tensions between the two nations. Shafiqul Alam, Press Secretary to Muhammad Yunus, Chief Advisor of Bangladesh’s interim government, expressed hope for strengthening ties during this visit.
Speaking to media, Alam said, “Both Foreign Secretaries are going to discuss issues of mutual interest, and we hope these meetings will help deepen ties between the two neighbors.” He further stated, “We think that our relations with India remain okay, and we are trying to better our relationship. Both countries are trying to deepen our relationship, and we hope in the coming days and coming months the relations will be much better.”
The statement follows a recent incident where Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Pranay Verma, was summoned by Bangladesh’s Foreign Ministry. This was in response to protests outside the premises of the Bangladesh Acting High Commission in Agartala. Following his meeting with Bangladesh’s acting Foreign Secretary Riaz Hamidullah, Verma highlighted the broader context of India-Bangladesh relations.
He said, “We have a wide-ranging and multifaceted relationship. You cannot reduce it to one issue. We want to build on the dependencies [between the countries] to mutual benefit.”
The upcoming discussions between the Foreign Secretaries aim to address key concerns and foster stronger bilateral cooperation, demonstrating the commitment of both nations to maintaining a stable and constructive relationship.
