Wreath-Laying Ceremonies Held Across India and Bangladesh as Nations Honour Courage and Sacrifices of Armed Forces
Kolkata, December 16: On Vijay Diwas, officers from the Indian Armed Forces and their counterparts from the Bangladesh Army gathered at the Vijay Smarak at Fort William in Kolkata to commemorate India’s historic victory in the 1971 Indo-Pakistan War. The solemn event featured a wreath-laying ceremony and a special tribute as flowers were showered from helicopters at the memorial.
Officers from the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force participated in the Kolkata event, paying homage to the soldiers who fought for India’s victory and the liberation of Bangladesh.
Joint Celebrations Between India and Bangladesh
The 53rd anniversary of Vijay Diwas is being marked jointly by India and Bangladesh, underscoring the enduring bond forged during the 1971 war. Eight Indian war veterans and two serving officers of the Indian Armed Forces traveled to Dhaka to take part in Bangladesh’s Victory Day celebrations.
Similarly, eight distinguished Muktijoddhas (freedom fighters) and two officers from the Bangladesh Armed Forces arrived in India to join Vijay Diwas commemorations in Kolkata.
Nationwide Tributes
Tributes to the 1971 war heroes extended beyond Kolkata. Officers of the Indian Army laid wreaths at the Shaheed Smarak in Colaba Military Station, Mumbai, and a similar ceremony was held in Chennai. These events reflected a nationwide commitment to honour the courage and sacrifices of the Indian Armed Forces.
PM Modi Pays Homage
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the soldiers who secured India’s victory in 1971. In a post on X, he highlighted the unwavering resolve and extraordinary valour of the armed forces.
“Today, on Vijay Diwas, we honour the courage and sacrifices of the brave soldiers who contributed to India’s historic victory in 1971. Their selfless dedication safeguarded our nation and brought glory to us. Their sacrifices will forever inspire generations and remain deeply embedded in our nation’s history,” PM Modi wrote.

Vijay Diwas serves as a reminder of the 13-day war that concluded with the signing of the Instrument of Surrender in Dhaka on December 16, 1971, leading to the creation of Bangladesh (formerly East Pakistan).
This day remains a cornerstone of national pride, celebrating the unparalleled bravery of India’s soldiers while reinforcing the strong ties between India and Bangladesh.
