INDIA Alliance Focused Solely On National Elections : Sharad Pawar

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], January 14: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Sharad Pawar clarified on Tuesday that discussions within the INDIA alliance have so far been limited to national-level elections, with no talks regarding state or local elections. Pawar emphasized that the alliance’s primary focus remains on the 2024 general elections.

Speaking to the media at a press conference, Sharad Pawar said, “There have been no discussions regarding state or local elections within the INDIA alliance. The alliance is solely focused on national-level elections.”

Pawar also addressed the upcoming municipal elections in Maharashtra, revealing that discussions on whether to contest jointly or separately would take place in the next 8-10 days. “In the upcoming municipal elections in Maharashtra, we will hold a meeting in 8-10 days to decide whether we will fight together or alone,” he stated.

This development comes after Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) MP Sanjay Raut announced that his party would contest the municipal elections in Mumbai and Nagpur independently. Raut emphasized that the decision was made to strengthen the party at the local level and provide workers with opportunities to contest elections beyond the general and assembly elections.

Raut had also urged the Congress party to take responsibility for keeping the INDIA alliance intact, expressing disappointment over the lack of meetings since the alliance’s formation. He suggested that it was now up to the Congress to call for a meeting.

Meanwhile, as the Delhi assembly elections approach, Sharad Pawar expressed his support for Arvind Kejriwal, the AAP supremo and former Delhi Chief Minister. Pawar suggested that his party should assist Kejriwal in the upcoming elections, hinting at potential political collaboration between the two leaders.

“My feeling is that we should help Arvind Kejriwal in the Delhi assembly elections,” Pawar said, signaling his backing for the AAP leader ahead of the polls on February 5. The votes will be counted on February 8, with nominations closing on January 17.

In contrast to the NCP’s position, Congress has faced significant setbacks in Delhi, failing to win any seats in the last two assembly elections. In 2020, AAP dominated the Delhi assembly polls, winning 62 out of 70 seats, while the BJP secured just eight.

Earlier in the week, Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched a strong attack on Sharad Pawar and Uddhav Thackeray, accusing them of “betrayal” and “backstabbing” politics. Shah also praised the victory of the ‘Mahayuti’ alliance in Maharashtra, claiming that the people had rejected the politics of deception associated with Pawar and Thackeray, marking a shift in the state’s political landscape. He affirmed that Eknath Shinde’s party was now seen as the “real Shiv Sena” and Ajit Pawar’s faction as the “real NCP.”
