Income Tax Department Dismisses Claims Of ITR Deadline Extension, Upholds September 15 Due Date

NEW DELHI – The Income Tax Department used its official X (previously Twitter) account to respond to and put an end to speculations that the deadline for filing income tax returns (ITRs) will be pushed back on Sunday. The government made it clear in a post that “The due date for filing ITRs remains 15.09.2025,” which directly contradicts what many are saying on social media.

The fake letter that has been going around online said that the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has decided to move the deadline to September 30. The bogus notice said that the extension was needed since the system wasn’t ready and stakeholders were worried.

This new wave of false information comes after the deadline for reporting ITRs had already been pushed back already this year. The due date was changed from July 31, 2025, to September 15, 2025, since several taxpayers reported technological problems, such as portal difficulties and data inconsistencies.

The Income Tax Department encouraged taxpayers to only use the official Income Tax India account for up-to-date and correct information. The department has a helpdesk open 24 hours a day, seven days a week to help taxpayers during this last push. You can get help by calling, chatting live, having a WebEx session, or tweeting.

Earlier on Saturday, the department hosted a big party to commemorate a big milestone: they said that more than 6 crore ITRs had already been filed for the Assessment Year 2025-26. The government wrote a post thanking taxpayers and tax experts for their help in making this happen. “We ask everyone who hasn’t filed their ITR for AY 2025-26 to do so as soon as possible to avoid the last-minute rush.” “Let’s keep this going!” the post said.

The government has been encouraging taxpayers to finish the process by the deadline on Monday, September 15, so they don’t have to pay any penalties.
