“In This House, We Feel Safe”: Chhattisgarh’s Pahari Korwa Community On Getting Concrete Houses Under PM Janman Yojana

Balrampur (Chhattisgarh) [India]: As the Chhattisgarh government provided concrete houses under the Pradhan Mantri Janman Yojana to the Pahari Korwa community, they expressed happiness and said they felt safer in the new house than in the makeshift huts in which they used to live.

Pahari Korwa community is a Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG).

“After almost four generations, we have been given a permanent house by the Modi government and we have been living well ever since. In the mud house, scorpions and snakes would come and bite us. Ever since the Modi government has given us this permanent house, we feel safe,” a beneficiary of the scheme told media.

“Now we have a permanent house instead of a mud house. Modi government has given and done a lot for the Pahari Korwa community,” a woman beneficiary said.
Under this campaign, concrete houses will replace the makeshift huts in which generations of Pahari Korwa families have lived.

” 4-5 generations ago, we were allotted a temporary house, and now in the same place we have been given a ‘pakka’ house by the Chhattisgarh government. Now that we have a permanent house, we will have no trouble. The Modi government has given us this house,” another beneficiary said.

Balrampur district, located on Chhattisgarh’s northern part, around 5000 families of PVTG and still most of them were residing in makeshift huts made from mud. These villagers have to face serious problems while residing in such houses.

Villagers informed that they have to face trouble due to water dripping from the house during the rainy season. Similarly, snakes, scorpions, as other poisonous insects also pose a serious threat to them. Now, the problem being faced by them has been resolved to a greater extent as the population belonging to PVTG are receiving housing facilities under the central government’s Pradhan Mantri Janman Yojana.

According to the officials in district administration, under the PM Janman Yojana, beneficiaries receive Rs 2 lakh in four installments for the construction of houses. Apart from the labour payment of 45 days, the government is providing Rs 12000 for the construction of the toilet.

Funds are directly transferred to beneficiaries’ bank accounts, said the officials, adding that hundreds of people belonging to PVTG have already completed construction of houses under this scheme.
