“IMF Aid Must Not Fuel Terrorism”: Gaurav Gogoi Welcomes Ceasefire, Urges Accountability

Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi praises Indian armed forces, calls for vigilance over Pakistan’s IMF funds, and reaffirms India’s unity and constitutional values amid de-escalation with Pakistan.

New Delhi, May 11:
As India and Pakistan agreed to halt military action across land, air, and sea, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi extended support to the ceasefire initiative while cautioning against the misuse of international aid by Pakistan. Gogoi praised the professionalism of the Indian armed forces, called for justice for the victims of recent attacks, and urged that the $2.5 billion IMF assistance to Pakistan not be funneled to terror networks.

“I am grateful to the Indian armed forces for their stellar and professional role in defending India’s territory and sovereignty. The men and women made us proud,” Gogoi said in a statement on X. “I continue to pray for those families who suffered tremendously during the Pahalgam attack and the cross-border firing in Jammu and Kashmir, especially the Poonch region.”

Addressing broader geopolitical concerns, Gogoi emphasized that international vigilance is necessary to ensure that foreign aid, including the IMF loan coordinated by the United States, is not diverted to hostile activities.

“The US, through the IMF, has overseen the funding of $2.5 billion into the Pakistani economy and has brokered an immediate ceasefire between India and Pakistan. I only hope they can ensure that this aid is not funnelled into terror groups,” he added.

Gogoi also highlighted the failure of Pakistan’s long-standing ideological agenda to divide India along religious lines. “Pakistan wanted to spread the two-nation theory in India, but Indians of all religions, ethnicities, and linguistic backgrounds rejected it and swore by the secularism in our Constitution,” he wrote. “Over the last few days, Indians stood as one, united under our Tiranga, and everyone supported the Prime Minister and his government.”

Ceasefire Agreement

The ceasefire was officially confirmed by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, who informed the media that the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of both nations had engaged in direct communication. The agreement was reached at 15:35 IST on Saturday, with cessation of all hostilities implemented from 17:00 IST the same day.

“Pakistan’s DGMO called the Indian DGMO. They agreed that both sides would stop all firing and military action on land, in the air, and at sea,” Misri said. “Instructions have been issued to enforce this understanding, and the DGMOs will resume talks again on May 12 at noon.”

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar reiterated India’s firm stance on terrorism. “India and Pakistan have worked out an understanding on the stoppage of firing and military action. India has consistently maintained a firm and uncompromising stance against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. It will continue to do so,” he stated.

Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar also confirmed the ceasefire in a statement: “Pakistan and India have agreed to a ceasefire with immediate effect. Pakistan has always strived for peace and security in the region, without compromising its sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

Global Role in De-escalation

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio acknowledged the efforts of both governments and revealed that negotiations will continue at a neutral venue. “Over the past 48 hours, Vice President Vance and I have engaged with senior Indian and Pakistani officials, including Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Shehbaz Sharif… I am pleased to announce that the governments of India and Pakistan have agreed to an immediate ceasefire and to start talks on a broad set of issues at a neutral site,” Rubio said.

Background: Operation Sindoor and the Pahalgam Attack

The ceasefire comes days after India launched Operation Sindoor in retaliation for the deadly April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which killed 26 people, including civilians and a Nepalese national. The Indian armed forces struck nine terror sites across Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Jammu and Kashmir in response. This was followed by a sharp escalation from Pakistan, using drones and cross-border artillery.

India has since asserted its right to respond decisively to any future provocations, while expressing readiness to support regional peace if terrorism is permanently dismantled.
