New Delhi [India]: Get ready for an extremely hot summer, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts nearly double the usual number of heatwave days across Northwest India.
Key Predictions by IMD:
🔥 Heatwave Days to Double:
- Typically, Northwest India experiences 5 to 6 heatwave days per season.
- This year, the number is expected to rise to 10-12 days.
🌡️ Above-Normal Temperatures Expected:
- West and Central India will see higher-than-usual heatwave conditions.
- Most parts of India will witness above-normal maximum and minimum temperatures.
- Southern Peninsular India and some parts of the Northeast may see normal or slightly below-normal temperatures.
🌬 Temporary Relief from Dust-Raising Winds:
- North-westerly winds from Rajasthan will cause a temporary 3-4°C dip in maximum temperatures across Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan over the next three days.
- Winds blowing at 20-30 km/h will make the weather dusty and dry.
What Defines a Heatwave?
IMD classifies a heatwave when:
☀️ The maximum temperature reaches at least 40°C in the plains.
☀️ The temperature is 5°C above normal levels.
