IMD Issues Yellow Alert For Delhi, Red Alert For Gujarat Amid Worsening Heatwave Across India

New Delhi [India]: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Delhi, warning of heatwave conditions and rising temperatures over the next two days. The national capital is among several regions across the country experiencing unusually high temperatures early in April.

Severe Heatwave Grips Gujarat

A red alert has been issued for Gujarat, specifically the Saurashtra and Kutch regions, where temperatures have soared to critical levels. Kandla recorded a staggering 44°C on Sunday, the highest temperature in the country so far this season.
An orange alert has been placed for Gujarat from April 8 to 10, as the heatwave is expected to intensify further.

Extreme Temperatures Across India

According to the IMD, 21 cities across five states have already recorded temperatures above 42°C, signaling the onset of an early and severe heatwave.
The affected states include:

  • Delhi
  • Rajasthan
  • Madhya Pradesh
  • Maharashtra
  • Odisha

“Heat wave conditions are very likely in isolated pockets of Himachal Pradesh on April 7; Haryana, Chandigarh, and Punjab during April 7–10; Delhi on April 7 and 8; and parts of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh through April 10,” the IMD said in its latest bulletin.

Record-Breaking Heat in Rajasthan

In Rajasthan’s Barmer, temperatures touched 45.6°C, setting a new record for the first week of April with a temperature 6.8°C above normal.
An orange alert is in effect for Rajasthan on April 7 and 8, followed by a yellow alert on April 9 and 10, due to severe heatwave conditions in isolated pockets.

Humidity Adds to Discomfort in Coastal Regions

The coastal belts of Gujarat, Konkan, and Goa are also expected to experience hot and humid conditions from April 7 to 9. These weather patterns are likely to cause significant discomfort, especially for vulnerable populations.

Delhi’s Air Quality Remains Concerning

As Delhi battles the heat, the Air Quality Index (AQI) levels in multiple districts remained moderate to poor:

  • Anand Vihar – 292 (Poor)
  • Okhla Phase 2 – 293 (Poor)
  • Patparganj – 252 (Poor)
  • Wazirpur – 260 (Poor)
  • RK Puram – 221 (Poor)
  • ITO – 209 (Moderate)
  • Chandni Chowk – 198 (Moderate)
  • Najafgarh – 165 (Moderate)

Data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) shows a combined threat of high pollution and heat, heightening health concerns, especially for the elderly and those with respiratory conditions.

Stay Safe Guidelines:

  • Avoid outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours.
  • Stay hydrated and wear loose, light-colored clothing.
  • Use sunscreens and carry umbrellas or caps.
  • Watch for symptoms of heatstroke such as dizziness, weakness, or confusion.
