IMD Issues Red Alert For Mumbai, Thane, Raigad And Palghar; Extremely Heavy Rainfall Expected

Mumbai: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday issued a red alert for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad and Palghar districts, warning of extremely heavy rainfall on Sunday with very intense spells in some areas.

“Extremely heavy rainfall is likely over Mumbai, Thane, Raigad and Palghar districts with very intense spells in some areas. Coastal districts such as Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg, along with the ghat regions of Nashik, are also expected to witness heavy showers,” an IMD official said.

The alert, upgraded from an earlier orange warning, comes after Mumbai recorded light to moderate showers on Saturday. Between 8 am Friday and 8 am Saturday, the island city logged 30.07 mm rainfall, while eastern and western suburbs received 26.12 mm and 9.99 mm, respectively, according to civic officials.

The rest of Maharashtra, including north Maharashtra, central Maharashtra, Marathwada and Vidarbha, is expected to receive only low-intensity rainfall on Sunday.

Despite the rains, road traffic in Mumbai was normal, though local train services faced delays.
