Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) [India], June 13: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert across ten districts in Kerala, warning of extremely heavy rainfall from June 14 to 17, 2025, as the southwest monsoon intensifies across southern India.
The districts under orange alert include:
- Kasaragod
- Kannur
- Kozhikode
- Wayanad
- Malappuram
- Palakkad
- Thrissur
- Ernakulam
- Idukki
- Kottayam
Additionally, four other districts are on yellow alert, signaling potential for heavy rainfall and localised flooding.
According to the IMD release:
“Heavy (7–11 cm) to very heavy (12–20 cm) and isolated extremely heavy (>20 cm) rainfall is likely at a few places in Kerala between June 14 and 17, and at isolated places on June 12, 13, and 18.”
Meanwhile, Lakshadweep is also expected to receive heavy rainfall on June 14 and 15.
Karnataka Update: Torrential Rains and Waterlogging in Hubballi
The monsoon revival has also impacted Karnataka, where the IMD has issued a seven-day alert, forecasting widespread rainfall in nearly all districts until June 17.
Early on Thursday, the Hubballi region in Dharwad district witnessed torrential downpours, leading to severe waterlogging in areas like Hanashi village.
Rainfall will remain:
- Widespread in coastal and north interior Karnataka until June 17
- Fairly widespread in south interior districts until June 14, before intensifying again
In coastal Karnataka, districts including Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada, and Udupi may see:
- Heavy to very heavy rainfall
- Isolated extremely heavy rainfall
- Sustained winds of 30–40 kmph
Precautions Advised
Residents in vulnerable areas are advised to:
- Avoid flood-prone zones
- Stay indoors during heavy showers
- Follow updates from local authorities and disaster management units
The IMD is closely monitoring the situation and will continue to issue timely alerts.
