IMD Issues Orange Alert For Telangana; Thunderstorms, Hailstorms Likely Over Next Five Days

New Delhi [India], May 13: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Telangana, forecasting thunderstorms, hailstorms, and light to moderate rainfall across the state over the next five days.

According to K Nagaratna, Director of the Meteorological Centre in Hyderabad, current weather conditions are influenced by two troughs:

  • One extends from West Vidarbha to North Kerala at about 0.9 km above mean sea level
  • The other stretches from East Uttar Pradesh to North Odisha across Chhattisgarh

“Under the influence of these systems, Telangana is expected to witness light to moderate rains in a few places today, with thunderstorm and hailstorm activity likely over western Telangana,” Nagaratna said.

Rainfall Outlook

From May 14 onwards, rainfall activity is expected to intensify, with many areas receiving rainfall and severe weather such as thunderstorms and hailstorms forecast for western districts of the state over the next 48 hours.
By May 19, a gradual decrease in rainfall and thunderstorms is anticipated.

Heatwave Conditions

On the temperature front, Nagaratna warned that heatwave conditions may persist in parts of Telangana.

“Temperatures are expected to range between 36°C to 40°C across most parts of the state for the next four to five days,” she said.

As a result, the IMD has also issued a yellow warning for potential heatwave conditions in Telangana.

Monsoon Forecast

Looking ahead, Nagaratna noted that the southwest monsoon could arrive in Kerala 3 to 4 days earlier than the usual onset date of June 1.

“Monitoring is ongoing. The early onset signals a possible above-normal monsoon season for 2025,” she added.

The IMD has projected that India’s southwest monsoon rainfall from June to September 2025 is most likely to be above normal, exceeding 104% of the Long Period Average (LPA).

Significance of Monsoon Onset

The onset of the southwest monsoon over Kerala marks a significant transition from the hot, dry summer to the rainy season. It typically begins around June 1, with a standard deviation of about 7 days. As the monsoon advances northward, it brings much-needed relief from scorching temperatures across the country.
