IMD Issues Heatwave Warning For Delhi-NCR, Predicts Light Rainfall On April 11

New Delhi [India], April 8: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heatwave warning for Delhi-NCR over the next two days, as temperatures continue to rise in the region. A brief spell of relief is expected with a prediction of light rainfall on April 1

“We have issued a heatwave warning in Delhi-NCR for the next two days. On 11th April, there is a probability of light rainfall,” IMD Scientist Dr Naresh Kumar informed ANI.

In addition to Delhi-NCR, Rajasthan has been placed under a red alert due to extreme heatwave conditions. “Temperatures during both day and night are expected to remain extremely high. The situation should start improving after 48 hours,” Kumar added.

Meanwhile, in Himachal Pradesh, temperatures are currently soaring 3 to 6 degrees Celsius above normal, prompting the Shimla Meteorological Centre to issue a yellow alert for a heatwave in lower hill regions. Relief is on the horizon, however, as a Western Disturbance is expected to affect the region starting April 9.

“A Western Disturbance is likely to approach the state from April 9. There is a possibility of light rainfall at isolated places in districts like Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, and Lahaul-Spiti,” said Sandeep Kumar Sharma, Senior Scientist at IMD Himachal Pradesh.

Rainfall activity is forecasted to intensify across the middle hill districts of the state on April 10 and 11. “Rainfall along with thunderstorms and lightning is likely in parts of Shimla, Kullu, Kangra, Mandi, and Sirmaur,” Sharma noted.

By April 12, precipitation is expected to subside, with clear weather anticipated from April 13 onwards.

On April 7, Delhi’s Safdarjung, Ridge, and Ayanagar stations reported heatwave conditions, with mercury levels crossing 40°C. IMD expects the heatwave to persist until April 9. A gradual dip in temperatures is likely from April 10 across Northwest India, including Delhi.
