Washington DC [US], June 5: Music legend Billy Joel was notably absent from the Tribeca Film Festival premiere of his documentary Billy Joel: And So It Goes, days after cancelling all upcoming tour dates due to a serious health diagnosis.
The documentary, directed by Susan Lacy and Jessica Levin, debuted at New York’s Beacon Theatre and offers fans an intimate look into Joel’s life with rare footage and personal interviews. While the 74-year-old icon couldn’t attend, stars like Whoopi Goldberg, Tom Hanks, Robert De Niro, and Mariska Hargitay graced the red carpet.
Last month, Joel revealed he has been diagnosed with Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH) — a rare brain condition marked by an excess buildup of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain’s ventricles. The condition has already impacted his hearing, vision, and balance, prompting doctors to prescribe physical therapy and recommend a complete pause from performing.
“He is thankful for the excellent care he is receiving and is fully committed to prioritising his health,” his team stated on Instagram, adding that Joel is “sincerely sorry to disappoint” fans.
His wife, Alexis Joel, also shared a heartfelt Instagram update, posting a family photo and thanking supporters:
“Bill is beloved by so many, and to us, he is a father and husband at the centre of our world… We are hopeful for his recovery.”
Fans continue to send their love and support as Joel focuses on healing, with hopes high that the Piano Man will one day return to the stage.
