IIM-Calcutta Student Arrested For Alleged Rape Of Fellow Student On Campus

Kolkata: A male student of the Indian Institute of Management-Calcutta (IIM-C) has been arrested for allegedly raping a fellow student inside the boys’ hostel on the prestigious institution’s campus in West Bengal.

The incident occurred on Friday, after which the woman filed a complaint at Haridevpur Police Station. The accused, also a student at IIM-C, was taken into custody the same night and was formally arrested on Saturday.

“She alleged she was invited for a counselling session at the boys’ hostel. After consuming a drink she believes was spiked, she lost consciousness and was sexually assaulted,” said a police official.

The woman further told police that the accused threatened her with serious consequences if she disclosed the incident. An FIR has been registered, and the investigation is ongoing.

Institution Silent So Far

As of now, IIM-Calcutta has not issued an official statement regarding the incident. Police are expected to question other students and staff as part of their investigation.

Context: Recent College Campus Sexual Assault in Kolkata

This incident comes less than two weeks after the alleged gang rape of a 24-year-old law student at a Kolkata law college on June 25. In that case, the woman was reportedly assaulted inside a security guard’s room by a former student and two senior students, while a security guard was present.

Four arrests have been made, including the prime accused Monojit Mishra, and the Calcutta High Court has sought a detailed police progress report within four weeks.

Growing Concerns Over Campus Safety

The back-to-back sexual assault cases at two of Kolkata’s most reputed educational institutions have sparked alarm over campus safety, consent, and institutional responsibility. Both incidents have prompted calls for institutional reforms, stronger grievance redressal mechanisms, and legal oversight.
